The article is an overview of the main causes of coal dust and methaneair mixture explosions in underground coal mines. The authors draw attention to the shortcomings of the currently available air-gas monitoring systems. The requirements are listed to the explosion safety monitoring systems for underground mine workings. These systems are designed on the basis of the research performed by the National Mining Research Center – A.A. Skochinsky Institute of Mining FGUP, Research Center VostNII AO, Aerotest OOO.
