The article describes the state-of-the art of the nonmetallic construction material sector (NMCM) in Russia. The statistics is presented on the nonmetallic feedstock output in 2010 and in the first quarter of 2011 for different regions of Russia. It is proved that the state-of-the art of the domestic NMCM sector is rather poor: labour productivity in Russia is 10-fold lower than in advanced industrial countries, mines make use of outdated mining and processing technologies, as well as old-fashioned equipment, which has been in operation for more than 30-40 years. It is noted also that in the current situation the only scenario for the sector survival is the amalgamation of producers and the soonest possible modernization of mines and processing facilities, cutting of power inputs and broader application of efficient technologies.
