The article describes foreign practices of cooperation between private and state-owned sectors of the economy in funding of research and development projects (R&D). The estimates are given of the foreign practices of R&D funding and proportions of the government and private business contributions, as well as methods encouraging private business participation in R&D funding. The author offers ways of the formation of funds for joint financing of R&D projects by the government and coal companies for the current situation in Russia. Opportunities are described of tax incentives for coal companies investing in R&D projects.
