The article contains the statistics and historic data on the manufacture and supply of power shovel basic models and hydraulic excavators to open pits of the Russian Federation and other CIS countries. The authors discuss factors having an effect on the machinery service life. The charts are provided reflecting the variation of excavator operation time by series over a 20–30-year period of their service life.

The charts are plotted based on the applicable codes and standards, as well as actual statistics. The description is given of the theoretical grounds of the method and the algorithm for the estimation of the excavator optimal service life before retirement and write-off.
