The article describes system-wide shortcomings of the coal-fired power sector of Russia. The author proposes the bundling of two commercial stages of coal processing via the construction of underground coal gasifiers. A flowsheet is proposed for the underground energy production technology based on the in-situ coal gasification method with fuel gas and steam supply to mini-TPPs. The advantages of the new concept of coal-fired power generation are emphasized as compared with conventional coal-fired TPP technologies. Case studies of in-situ coal gasification in the Kuznetsk Basin and China are described.
