The authors describe the principal mining machinery and equipment designed for mechanical breaking of hard rock and half-rock in open pits and quarries of Russia and abroad and discuss their advantages and shortcomings. The article also contains the analysis of the relation of excavation machinery unit performance in terms of rock breaking and their specifications determining the efficiency of this or another machine for breaking of hard rock and half-rock characterized by 50–70 MPa compression strength.
