The capacity of an open pit in terms of mineral output has a limit beyond which the costs of mineral deposit mining by surface method will be higher than those for its development by underground method. The efficiency of an open pit depends on the relation of the estimated annual increase of mining depth and its maximum value. With such relation meeting a certain open-pit capacity the cost of mineral production exceeds the acceptable value.
