The author proves that further development of the Russian coal sector requires at least 3-5-fold enhancement of labour productivity. The article describes the areas of labour productivity enhancement potential in the Russian coal sector due to the expansion of investments in plant and equipment and fixed assets. The author dwells in detail on major innovative exploration, coal mining and processing projects in Russia, which facilitate the enhancement of labour productivity. The articles also contains the analysis of research and development funding practice in foreign countries, the proportion of the contributions of the government and business community in the total funding, and proposes a system of measures aimed at the support of innovations in the Russian coal industry, as well as the main areas of innovative activities in the coal industry of the Russian Federation.
