Data on coal production is provided for the period between 1887 and 1917. It is noted that the production volumes were changing in the stepwise manner, i.e. periods of growth were followed by plateaus and even declines. Export and import patterns are described as well as the apparent consumption of coal in 1911-1917. The paper provides characteristics of the Donbas, Poland, Moscow, Kuzbas and Cheremkhovo coal basins. Activities of the ‘Produgol’ Syndicate are described during the coal famine period in Russia. A decline in coal production and reduction of import volumes during the coal famine resulted in increased consumption of other types of fuels, i.e. oil and firewood. The research presents the evolution of coal consumption by industrial plants and railways, which were the main areas of coal use.
