Abstract: The article discusses characteristics of the value chains that have developed in the Russian coal industry. It has been justified that the involvement of the coal industry in the value chain based on promising clean coal processing technologies is becoming a critical task in the context of the imposed sanctions and it is a real step towards new industrialization and transformation of the corner stone sector of the Russian fuel and energy complex. The author's approach to the study of the coal value chains is based on identifying the existing types of value chains in the coal industry, assessing their current resilience and modeling possible directions for upgrading the value chain to increase long-term resilience. A conclusion is made that, despite the currently emerging concept of the carbon-free energy development, the coal industry has all the necessary development prospects due to a differentiated approach to upgrading the value chains based on new flexible technologies and taking into account the specific features of individual companies. Such value chains can be formed at the existing coal mining operations, and in the future it will become possible to create various production facilities for environmentally friendly products based on already existing value chains.
