Abstract: Studying the research experience of predecessors is a crucial factor in obtaining efficient results in the present-day research process. Academic museums and scientific collections historically play an important role in addressing this task. In this context, the article presents an analysis of the thematic collection of scientific literature of the late 19th - first half of the 20th Centuries, exhibited at the Institute of Coal of the Federal Research Center of Coal and Coal Chemistry of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The collection documents the development of comprehensive knowledge on coal and the evolution of its technological processing. Its scientific and information potential provides an insight into the oldest charring processes; the first experiments of industrial coking of hard coal and the evolution of coke furnaces; it also reflects the dynamics of understanding the nature of coal. The methods of comparative analysis and generalization allowed to reveal the information value and representative character of the collection for understanding its role in documenting the development of the coal science.
