Abstract: The article describes the specific characteristics of the Arctic regions in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), which make the delivery of fuel and energy resources to settlements scattered over a large territory more difficult. Mining of the local coal resources is one of the ways to ensure energy security and supply affordable building materials to the local population. The article gives a brief description of the existing ways to deliver fuel and energy resources and discusses the structure of fuel consumption, volume of imported resources, and the cost of delivery. The article provides information of the reserves of the deposits listed in the State Register of Reserves, describes the criteria and requirements that are used as the necessary basis to identify the most promising deposits in the region for their priority development. The economic efficiency of mining the local resources is limited by the social orientation of the development, ensuring above all the energy security of the population. The article considers possible incentives for the local companies that are already engaged in mining or are planning to start it.
