Abstract: This paper investigates the abrasive wear resistance of various steels and provides a rationale for material selection in fabrication and lining of the working attachments for the mining and hauling machines operating in predominantly abrasive conditions. The relevance of this study lies in a demand from the mining and machine-building companies for evidence-based recommendations on import substitution of Hardox, a widely used Swedish wear-resistant steel, as well as the lack of sufficient quantitative data in the published literature to justify the selection of alternative materials. Experimental investigations were conducted using the LKI-3 laboratory abrasion tester operating on a fixed-abrasive friction configuration. Specimens of the Hardox, 110G13L (Hadfield), Magstrong, NM, and U8 steels were tested. Particular attention was paid to establishing and analyzing the time-dependent wear behavior, as well as to calculating the linear wear rate and the specific work of friction. Based on the obtained results, U8 steel exhibited the highest wear resistance; however, its brittleness makes its use impossible in components subjected to impact stresses. On the other hand, Hadfield steel exhibited the poorest wear resistance in the absence of work hardening. The Hardox, Magstrong, and NM steels demonstrated comparable performance, which supports the recommendation of the Russian Magstrong and Chinese NM steels as lining materials for the working attachments for the mining and hauling machines operating predominantly in abrasive wear conditions.
