Summary: The purpose of the study is to assess the integrated economic efficiency of the Russian mining companies, its importance natural environment. A comparison of interpretations of this category has been carried out, and a conclusion has been drawn about a simplified approach to assessing the efficiency of the Russian mineral resource complex from the perspective of the the economic entities and the society is shown, for which a formal financial assessment is not sufficient. The currently used the study differs from other developments in its system-based approach. This approach has become a method of building a set of the efficiency elements. The content of technological, environmental, social and economic factors of the mineral resource complex is described in combination with its financial performance indicators. These components in operation of the Russian mining companies required the development of a fundamentally new methodological approach to a comprehensive efficiency assessment of their activities. Differences in the efficiency are also taken into account from the perspective of companies and the complex of the Russian Federation. The most significant parameters are also modeled that characterize each element qualitatively or quantitatively. A scheme is provided for integrated evaluation of this set of elements and their indicators. The proposed system of elements for assessing the efficiency of mining companies and the approach to assessing national economic efficiency include a consideration of the most significant aspects of subsurface use, i.e. the technological, environmental, socio-economic, financial, budgetary ones. Conclusions are made on the need to use this approach in practical activities of the companies and the national economy.
